“Super Eagles Can Qualify” – AFCON Silver Medalist Eyes Morocco Showdown

 Former Nigerian international and Super Eagles striker, Benedict Akwuegbu, has expressed confidence in the national team's chances of securing qualification for the Intercontinental World Cup playoffs, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) playoffs are scheduled to take place in Morocco this November. Nigeria is set to face Gabon in the semifinals, with the winner progressing to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final playoff round. The eventual winners in the final match qualify to represent Africa at the FIFA Interncontinental playoff in Mexico in March 2026.

In an exclusive interview with BSN Sports, Akwuegbu shared his optimism following Nigeria’s recent performance against Benin Republic.

“I am optimistic that the Super Eagles will qualify for the World Cup if they play the way they did against Benin Republic,” he said.

Akwuegbu praised the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under the leadership of President Ibrahim Gusau, commending the federation for its continued support of the team. He also urged head coach Eric Chelle to remain tactically flexible.

 “The coach must be ready to adjust tactics when necessary,” he added. “Gabon will certainly study our last match and plan to neutralize players like [Victor] Osimhen.”

He emphasized the importance of early preparation ahead of the crucial fixtures. “Preparations for the World Cup playoffs must begin early. That will give the team enough time to improve upon their last performance.”

Akwuegbu’s Career Highlights

Benedict Akwuegbu enjoyed a successful club career in Europe, most notably in Austria with Grazer AK. He was instrumental in helping the club secure the Austrian Cup and Supercup titles in 2000 and 2002, and the Austrian Bundesliga title in 2004. His standout performances earned him the accolade of Best Foreign Player and the nickname "The Austrian Bomber" from the local press.

Internationally, Akwuegbu was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship in Scotland, although he did not feature in any matches. He later played for the U-20 national team and made his senior debut during the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), appearing in Nigeria’s match against Tunisia. Nigeria won silver medal after losing to Cameroon on penalties.

His performances earned him a place in the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in Nigeria's group-stage match against England. During the qualifiers, Akwuegbu contributed with two goals, helping secure the team’s place at the tournament.
