2025 Afrobasket: D'Tigress Historic Consecutive Fifth Title Earns Praise From House Committee On Sports

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.

D’Tigress clinched their seventh continental title and an unprecedented fifth straight championship, defeating Mali 78–64 in a fiercely contested final on Sunday night. With the win, the Nigerian side maintained its flawless record in Afrobasket finals — never having lost a championship game.

The Chairman House Committee On Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, hailed the achievement as a testament to Nigeria’s growing dominance in women’s sports and a reflection of the current administration’s increased investment in sports development. “Winning the title five times consecutively speaks volumes of consistency, talent, and commitment of D'Tigress. This is a proud moment for all Nigerians and underscores the importance of President Tinubu’s renewed focus on sports,” Amadu who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency stated.

The victory comes just days after Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, marking a golden period for women’s sports in the country.

Amadu expressed confidence that the players’ efforts would be duly recognized and rewarded, while also commending the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), the National Sports Commission, and the Federal Government for their roles in the team’s success.

In addition to lifting the trophy, D’Tigress, along with three other African teams, secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place in Berlin, Germany from September 4 to 13, 2026.
