2026 WAFCONQ: Desiree Ellis Dumps Banyana Banyana

All seems not to be well in the camp of the Banyana Banyana of South Africa as the final round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers reaches its climax, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The reigning WAFCON champions were without their head coach, Desiree Ellis, during the first leg of their qualifier against DR Congo on Wednesday a development that has sent shockwaves through South African football circles.

Reports from the team’s camp suggest that Ellis is on the verge of walking away from her role following ongoing contract issues with the South African Football Association (SAFA).

It was reported that Ellis’ contract expired before the last edition of the WAFCON in Morocco, but she opted to continue leading the team due to loyalty and commitment.

Despite her success, including guiding South Africa to its historic maiden continental title, SAFA has reportedly failed to provide her with a new, valid contract.

The uncertainty has now boiled over, with sources indicating that Ellis may have decided to step away from the team entirely. On the field, Banyana Banyana managed to hold DR Congo to a 1-1 draw in Kinshasa.

They will now need either a goalless draw or a win in the return leg to secure qualification for next year’s WAFCON.
