Ex-GFA Vice President Backs Eligibility of Dual-National Players for Black Stars

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice-President George Afriyie has expressed support for the inclusion of dual-national players in the Black Stars, insisting that eligibility and merit should guide national team selection, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Afriyie said players of Ghanaian heritage who meet the necessary requirements should not be excluded from consideration, regardless of previous international affiliations.

“At any point in time, if the player feels that this is the time to play for Ghana, why not?” he said. “If the coach believes that players such as Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi merit a place in the Black Stars and can help win matches, why not? Who determines who qualifies to be a Black Stars player or who deserves a call-up?”

Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi, both born in England to Ghanaian parents, previously represented England at youth and senior levels, but remain eligible to switch allegiance under FIFA regulations, subject to meeting the required criteria.

Afriyie emphasized that the Black Stars represent all Ghanaians worldwide and should remain open to any qualified player willing to commit to the national cause.

“The Black Stars belong to every Ghanaian everywhere, as long as he is Ghanaian, fit, competing at the highest level and eligible to represent the country. I do not see why such a player should not be invited,” he stated.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about broadening the national team’s talent pool as Ghana seeks to strengthen its squad for upcoming international competitions.
