2026 World Cup Qualifier: Chelle Backs Lookman’s Call-Up

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has strongly defended his decision to include Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Lookman was named in the final 23-man list for the fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa, despite not featuring this season for his Italian Serie A club.

Addressing the media in Uyo, Chelle stressed that the forward remains indispensable to his plans.

 “I can’t imagine releasing a squad list without Lookman. For me, he is currently the best player in Africa, and I have full confidence in him,” Chelle said.

 “As head coach, the responsibility lies with me to invite players I believe can make the difference. Whether he plays five minutes, ten minutes, or sixty minutes it’s my decision. After our final training session, I’ll determine his role.”
