2026 World Cup Qualifier: Hope Alive As Super Eagles Get First Home Victory

The Super Eagles kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification dream alive on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, BSNSports.com.ng reports 

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare came off the bench to score the decisive goal, handing the Eagles their first win of the qualifying campaign after a shaky start.

The match began on a tense note as the Amavubi of Rwanda frustrated the Nigerian side with their compact defensive shape. To compound Nigeria’s woes, star forward Victor Osimhen limped off midway through the first half, forcing coach Eric Chelle to make an early change.

Despite dominating possession, the Eagles struggled to break down Rwanda’s resolute defence, with Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho both missing good chances before the break.

The introduction of Arokodare in the second half turned the game on its head. The lanky striker’s aerial presence troubled the Rwandan defenders, and in the 72nd minute, he rose highest to nod home a cross from Moses Simon, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

Rwanda pushed for an equaliser late in the game, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali stood firm to preserve Nigeria’s lead and secure a much-needed victory.

The result lifts Nigeria back into contention in Group C, easing the pressure on coach Chelle after earlier draws had put the team’s qualification hopes in jeopardy.

The Super Eagles will now shift focus to their next crucial fixture against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Tuesday at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. With both sides in the hunt for qualification, the clash promises to be another intense battle.
