AFCON 2025: Coach Paul Put Confident Ahead Of Uganda Clash With Nigeria

Uganda head coach Paul Put has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite being drawn into a challenging Group C, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Cranes will face three-time champions Nigeria, North African heavyweights Tunisia, and East African rivals Tanzania, a group that Put admits will test his side’s resolve. 

“There are no easy games in Africa,” Put said after the draw. 

“Nigeria were runners-up at the last AFCON and remain one of the strongest teams on the continent. Tunisia is a consistent performer, regularly making it to the latter stages. Still, we must believe in ourselves and make the most of this opportunity.” 

The Belgian tactician stressed that Uganda’s preparation, mental strength, and tactical discipline will be crucial for the Morocco tournament. 

“We have to be ready physically, mentally, and tactically,” he added. 

“This is not just about 2025; it’s also an opportunity to build momentum as we prepare to host the tournament in 2027. It’s a big stage for our players to showcase their talent and inspire the Ugandan people.”

Uganda has qualified for AFCON seven times since making its debut in 1962. Their best performance came in 1978 when they finished as runners-up to Ghana.
