Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire legend Jonathan Bamba has surprisingly left out Nigeria’s Super Eagles when naming his favourites for the upcoming 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Despite Nigeria reaching the final of the last edition, Bamba did not include them among the teams he believes have a strong chance of winning the title in Morocco next year.

Speaking ahead of the continental showpiece, the Ivorian star expressed confidence in his country’s chances but was quick to point out that the competition remains unpredictable.

“I have an excellent feeling about it. The team is good, with a rotating squad. Despite the injuries, the team remains competitive. It’s great,” Bamba said.

“I don’t know if we are favourites, but I have a good feeling about this CAN. We know the favourites Senegal with its top players, Morocco also present, and Algeria too. But in this kind of competition, you may be the favourite, but it’s the pitch that speaks.”

Bamba’s omission of Nigeria from his list has raised eyebrows among fans, especially as the Super Eagles were runners-up at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

With the tournament just months away, Bamba’s comments are sure to add extra motivation for Nigeria as they aim to go one better in Morocco.
