AFCON 2025 Blow for Zambia as Coach Sichone Fails CAF Licence Test

Zambia’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have suffered a major setback just days before the tournament kicks off, after head coach Moses Sichone was ruled ineligible to lead the Chipolopolo at the continental finals in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, with 24 nations set to compete for the continent’s most prestigious football trophy.

However, Zambia’s build-up has been disrupted following confirmation that Sichone does not meet the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) updated coaching requirements for national team competitions.

Despite being regarded as one of Zambia’s most highly qualified coaches, the 48-year-old holds a UEFA A coaching licence, which falls short of CAF’s current regulations. Under the revised rules, all head coaches participating in CAF national team and club competitions must possess either a CAF A Licence or a CAF Pro Licence.

Sichone was appointed in November 2025 as Zambia head coach, replacing former Chelsea manager and Israeli tactician Avram Grant. With the tournament set to begin in three days, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is now racing against time to appoint a suitably qualified coach who meets CAF’s licensing criteria.

Zambia, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012, have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Comoros and Mali. The Chipolopolo are scheduled to open their campaign against Mali in a crucial group-stage encounter on December 22, 2025.
