AFCON 2025 Fallout: Algeria Threatens Legal Battle With CAF Over Loss To Nigeria

Algeria have threatened to launch a legal battle against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their 2–0 defeat to Nigeria at the quarter-final stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF), led by president Walid Sadi, has formally appealed to both CAF and FIFA after the federation was reportedly threatened with sanctions over its post-match reaction to the encounter against the Super Eagles.

Algeria was eliminated from the tournament after Nigeria secured a convincing 2–0 victory, but the North Africans have maintained that officiating decisions played a decisive role in the match's outcome.

FAF officials believe the referee influenced key moments of the game to their disadvantage. Buoyed by a recent victory at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the USM Alger case,

Algeria have adopted a firm stance, rejecting what they described as an abuse of power by CAF.

The federation insists it will not be intimidated by threats of sanctions and is prepared to pursue all available legal options.

 “The legal battle has begun,” sources close to the FAF confirmed, as Algeria consider escalating the matter to international football governing bodies.

CAF is yet to issue an official response to Algeria’s claims, but the development adds to the growing controversy surrounding officiating decisions at AFCON 2025, which has already generated significant debate among fans and stakeholders.

Nigeria, meanwhile, progressed from the quarter-final tie andremainsn focused on their campaign, as the fallout from the match continues off the pitch.
