AFCON 2025 Fallout: FIFA Council Takes Drastic Decision

The FIFA Council has announced a sweeping regulatory change in response to the controversial incidents that marred the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a move aimed at reinforcing discipline and respect for match officials, FIFA confirmed that any player who leaves the field of play in protest against a referee’s decision during matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will face immediate expulsion.

The new directive forms part of a broader effort to clamp down on dissent and restore order in high-stakes fixtures. 

FIFA further stated that individuals players or officials who incite such actions will also be held accountable under the governing body’s disciplinary framework.

The decision follows widespread criticism of player conduct during the AFCON 2025 final, where protests against officiating disrupted the flow of the match and raised concerns about authority and control on the pitch.

FIFA officials emphasized that the updated rule is intended to protect the integrity of the game while ensuring that referees’ decisions are respected at all levels of competition.

The regulation will take effect at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with member associations expected to brief players and technical staff ahead of the tournament.
