FIFA’s Referees Committee has officially opened an investigation into the officiating of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash between Algeria and Nigeria, following a formal complaint lodged by the Algeria Football Federation, BSNSports.com.ng reports

The highly anticipated encounter ended in a 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, securing their passage into the semifinals. 

However, the Algerian FA has raised concerns over several refereeing decisions, insisting that key calls during the match significantly influenced the outcome against their team.

At the center of the probe is Senegalese referee Issa Sy, who officiated the quarterfinal fixture. 

Algeria is understood to be dissatisfied with a number of decisions taken during the game, including incidents they believe warranted different disciplinary or match-changing outcomes.

Sources close to the development confirmed that FIFA’s Referees Committee will review match footage, referee reports, and submissions from both federations as part of the investigation process.

 The outcome could lead to further action if any breaches of refereeing standards or protocols are established.

Neither FIFA nor the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a detailed statement on the possible timeline for the investigation or potential sanctions, but the move underscores FIFA’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of officiating at major tournaments.
