AFCON 2028: South Africa Denies Submitting Joint Bid With Botswana

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has denied reports that the country has submitted a joint bid with another nation to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Reports had earlier emerged following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive meeting on Friday that Botswana submitted a joint bid with South Africa to host the tournament.

However, speaking to respected football journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, McKenzie dismissed the claims, stressing that South Africa is pursuing a solo bid for the continental showpiece.

 “We are going alone but will not close the doors on our neighbours if it becomes absolutely necessary,” McKenzie said.

The Sports Minister’s statement suggests that while South Africa’s current intention is to host AFCON 2028 independently, the country remains open to possible partnerships should circumstances require collaboration.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has also officially indicated its interest in hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, setting the stage for a competitive bidding process ahead of CAF’s final decision.

CAF is expected to review all submitted bids before announcing the host nation for the 2028 edition of Africa’s flagship football tournament.
