Addis Ababa is set to make history as it prepares to host its first international athletics competition, with a World Athletics One-Day Meeting scheduled for April 18, 2026, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Mayor Adanech Abiebie described the development as a major milestone for the Ethiopian capital, noting that the achievement follows sustained efforts to expand the city’s international engagement, strengthen sports diplomacy and improve sporting infrastructure.
The event has been officially listed on the World Athletics calendar under the “One Day Meeting” category and is expected to attract top athletes from different countries, with competitive prize money also on offer.
Hosting rights were confirmed after a working visit by Pierce O’Callaghan, competitions director at World Athletics, who evaluated Ethiopia’s readiness and its capacity to organise the event in line with global standards.
According to officials, the competition will be organised with the support of international technical experts, creating an opportunity for knowledge transfer to local professionals involved in sports management and event organisation.
Mayor Abiebie also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation and other stakeholders who played key roles in securing the hosting rights.
City authorities believe the meeting will further strengthen Ethiopia’s reputation in global athletics while also boosting the country’s presence in sports diplomacy.
