Africa Aquatics: Nigeria Finishes Day One Second On Medal Table With 8 Medals

Nigeria made an impressive start at the 2026 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Junior and Senior Swimming Championship in Dakar, Senegal, winning eight medals on the opening day, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian team finished Day One second on the medal table behind hosts Senegal, following a haul of two gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Aidan Dumuje and India Brown led Nigeria’s charge for gold, triumphing in the men’s and women’s 100-metre freestyle events respectively.

Omolola Akinsanmi, Demilade Ayemowa and Tofunmi Ibidapo were among the athletes who contributed to Nigeria’s silver-medal tally, with podium finishes recorded in events including the 100-metre freestyle, 100-metre breaststroke and 200-metre butterfly.

Nigeria also secured two bronze medals, including podium finishes in the boys’ and girls’ 200-metre breaststroke events as well as the junior mixed relay.

The strong opening-day performance puts Nigeria among the leading contenders in the championship, with the team expected to continue its medal push as competition resumes in Dakar.

The Nigerian contingent will be aiming to build on its impressive start and close the championship with an even stronger medal haul.
