Uganda's football community is mourning the death of SC Villa captain and Uganda international David Owori, who died after reportedly being assaulted during an attempted robbery in Kampala, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to police, the 27-year-old defender succumbed to injuries sustained after he was attacked by a group of suspected muggers near his home in the Makindye suburb on Tuesday night. Authorities said the attackers allegedly attempted to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings before assaulting him.

Witnesses reported that Owori was repeatedly struck with paving stones during the attack, leaving him critically injured before the assailants fled the scene with his valuables. He was initially taken to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he died on Wednesday despite efforts to save his life.

SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye described the incident as a tragic ambush.

"The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility," Kasingye said.

Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that investigations are underway, adding that detectives have processed the crime scene and collected evidence to identify those responsible.

"The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved," she said.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Uganda's sporting fraternity, with tributes pouring in from football administrators, teammates, political leaders and fans.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch," praising his professionalism, leadership and commitment to the game.

"David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation," the federation said in a statement.

Uganda's national football team, the Cranes, also paid tribute, describing Owori as a player who proudly represented his country and carried the hopes of countless supporters.

The Ugandan Parliament observed a minute of silence in his honour on Wednesday, while lawmakers called for a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

Widely regarded as one of Uganda's most dependable defenders, Owori was capable of playing both as a right-back and in midfield. His tactical intelligence, versatility and leadership made him one of the standout performers in the domestic league.

In 2024, he captained SC Villa to their first Uganda Premier League title in two decades, ending a 20-year wait for championship success and helping the club secure its record-extending 17th league crown. His performances earned him a contract extension that was set to keep him at the club until at least 2027.

Owori also featured for Uganda during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and was considered a strong contender for future national team selections.

His death has renewed concerns over violent crime in parts of Kampala, with sports figures and community leaders calling for improved public safety measures to protect residents. Police have appealed to members of the public with information about the attack to assist investigators.

David Owori leaves behind a legacy as one of Uganda's respected footballers, remembered not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his leadership, discipline and dedication to the sport.
