African Taekwondo Championship: Team Nigeria Wins More Medals

Nigeria continued its impressive outing at the 2026 African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali, as the country’s medal tally rose to seven, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Competing at the World Taekwondo-sanctioned G-4 tournament held at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga, Team Nigeria has so far secured three gold medals, one silver, and three bronze medals.

The latest medals were recorded in the Poomsae events on Tuesday. 

Aderibigbe Faridah delivered a standout performance to clinch gold in the Freestyle Poomsae category. She also combined effectively with Salawudeen Abdulafeez to secure a silver medal in the Pair Poomsae event.

Earlier, Haruna Usman had added to Nigeria’s gold medal count with a victory in the Poomsae U-40 Male category. 

Para-Taekwondo athlete Mathew Udom had opened Nigeria’s gold medal account with a commanding performance in the -57kg Kyorugi category on Monday.

Nigeria’s bronze medals came through Joel Jordan in the men’s +87kg Kyorugi division, Chidinma Okoko in the women’s -62kg Kyorugi category, and Salawudeen Abdulafeez in the Poomsae U-30 Male event.

Okoko had progressed to the semifinals after defeating Mali’s Samake Goundo in the quarterfinals before narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Team Nigeria’s strong performance in Bamako underlines the country’s growing reputation in Taekwondo on the African stage, with more events still to be decided.
