After Near Misses, Nasarawa United Focuses on Continental Ambitions for 2026/27

Nasarawa United Football Club has announced a 21-day off-season break for its players, technical crew and backroom staff following the conclusion of the 2025/26 football season, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The decision was reached during a management meeting held on Tuesday at the club's secretariat in Lafia. According to the club, the break will run from June 23 to July 13, 2026, providing the team with an opportunity to rest and recover after a demanding campaign.

The Solid Miners concluded the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season in sixth position with 56 points, while their President Federation Cup journey ended at the semi-final stage following a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Ikorodu City FC after regulation time ended 1-1.

Despite failing to secure silverware or a continental ticket, the club's board, led by Chairman Solomon Babanjah, expressed appreciation to the Nasarawa State Government and other stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout the season.

The club particularly acknowledged the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, for his sustained financial and moral support, describing his commitment to sports development and youth empowerment as instrumental to the team's stability during the campaign.

The Board also commended Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe for his steadfast support, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Hon. Kwanta Yakubu for his guidance and commitment to the club's welfare, and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Isaac Danladi, for his legal and professional assistance.

Further appreciation was extended to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Stephen Iliya Sasetu, the ministry's staff, and the Nasarawa State Football Association led by Salisu Usman Galadima for their administrative, regulatory and institutional support.

The club equally praised its supporters and fans for their loyalty throughout the season, describing them as the team's "12th man" whose encouragement remained invaluable during difficult moments. Members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nasarawa State Chapter, and other media practitioners were also commended for their objective coverage and constructive engagement.

Reflecting on the season, Nasarawa United Management acknowledged that the club fell short of its targets but stressed that lessons learned from the campaign would serve as a foundation for future success.

The club revealed that a comprehensive review of the season is already underway, with plans to strengthen the squad and position the team as a serious contender for major honours in the 2026/27 season.

Management further stated that securing a continental ticket and competing for trophies next season would not only reward the club's loyal supporters but also serve as a fitting tribute to Governor Abdullahi Sule, who is expected to complete his second and final term in office.

Nasarawa United is scheduled to resume pre-season preparations on July 14, 2026, as it begins planning for the new football season.
