Alliances and Ambitions Take Shape Ahead Of Federation Presidency Polls

With four months remaining before elections at the Benin Football Federation, the race for leadership is beginning to take shape, driven by emerging alliances, individual ambitions, and increasing political maneuvering behind the scenes, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Within the camp aligned with the outgoing administration, several figures have declared or are widely expected to declare their interest in the presidency. Among them is Member of Parliament Francis Koto Gbian, who has openly stated his intention to contest. He is joined by the president of the Benin Golf Federation, a key member of the FBF executive committee, who is also positioning himself for the role.

Other prominent names include Alphonse Pédro Ayéma, a close ally of the current leadership who has reportedly been building his campaign for nearly two years, and Marcelin Bocovè, a less outspoken but well-connected figure within football’s decision-making circles.

On the opposing side, a coalition of figures critical of the current administration is gradually consolidating. The FBF’s second vice-president, Magloire Oké, who distanced himself from the leadership in recent years, has aligned with seasoned football administrator Moucharaf Anjorin and former federation president Augustin Ahouanvoébla.

While this grouping suggests a unified front, underlying personal ambitions remain evident. Each of the leading figures is believed to be considering a presidential bid, adding an element of uncertainty to the opposition’s strategy.

Anjorin, a long-standing figure in Beninese football, faces potential eligibility concerns linked to age restrictions and is reportedly banking on a possible revision of the rules ahead of the August vote. Ahouanvoébla, known for his strategic influence and whose previous tenure ended prematurely, is also weighing a return to the forefront.

Oké, meanwhile, is viewed by some as a possible consensus candidate, though his ultimate role remains uncertain. There is speculation he could instead be positioned once again as vice-president within the coalition—a scenario that may not align with his stated presidential ambitions.

Beyond these two blocs, a third, less formal movement is emerging. This group is said to be promoting younger leadership, including a club president and a wealthy executive with professional ties to Central Africa. Should these figures formally enter the race, they could significantly alter the dynamics of the contest.

As the election draws closer, the outcome remains highly unpredictable. The months of June and July are expected to prove decisive, particularly regarding any potential involvement—direct or indirect—by state authorities in the process.

For now, the contest for the leadership of the Benin Football Federation remains wide open, with the eventual outcome likely to reflect a delicate balance of political negotiation, personal ambition, and institutional influence.
