Nigeria's sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan and several other world-class athletes could miss this weekend's Diamond League meeting in Paris after the event was threatened with cancellation due to an extreme heatwave, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Meeting de Paris, scheduled to take place at the Charléty Stadium, is reportedly on the verge of being called off following a directive from the Paris Police urging organisers to cancel the competition.

Authorities issued the request after declaring a red alert for the ongoing extreme heatwave, which has placed significant pressure on emergency services and healthcare facilities across the city since June 21.

The order also affects other major events scheduled for the weekend, including the Solidays music festival and the Pride March.

According to officials, although organisers proposed strengthening on-site medical services, the expected attendance of thousands of spectators could further overwhelm an already overstretched healthcare system.

The authorities warned that if organisers fail to voluntarily cancel the event, the meeting will be officially prohibited by government decree.

Should the cancellation be confirmed, Nigeria's world record holder in the women's 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, along with several other top athletes, will be forced to alter their competition schedules ahead of the busy athletics season.
