Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the gym where his boxing journey began, reconnecting with his first coach, Sean Murphy, at the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club, months after surviving a car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 36-year-old British-Nigerian boxer was involved in the accident on December 29, which resulted in the deaths of his personal trainer Kevin “Latz” Ayodele and long-time therapist Sina Ghami. The crash occurred just days after Joshua’s high-profile victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami.

Joshua has since been undergoing intensive physical therapy to recover from rib injuries sustained in the accident. His recent return to training at Finchley signals a renewed focus on rebuilding his fitness and reconnecting with the foundations of his boxing career.

The two-time heavyweight champion shared photos and videos from the gym on Instagram, captioning one post: “Quality time with Sean Murphy.”

Joshua first walked into Finchley Amateur Boxing Club at the age of 18, seeking direction after a troubled period growing up in London. Murphy quickly recognised his potential and helped develop his skills in the amateur ranks, guiding him to national titles before he achieved Olympic success.

Joshua went on to win gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London under the guidance of Team GB head coach Rob McCracken. His amateur achievements paved the way for a successful professional career that saw him capture multiple heavyweight world titles.

However, Joshua’s professional path has included several changes in coaching staff. After suffering a defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021, he parted ways with Murphy and later trained under a series of high-profile coaches, including Robert Garcia, Derrick James, and most recently Ben Davison.

Davison was in Joshua’s corner for recent bouts against Francis Ngannou, Jake Paul, and Daniel Dubois.

Joshua’s return to Finchley and his reunion with Murphy mark a symbolic homecoming for the heavyweight star as he continues his recovery and prepares for the next stage of his career.
