Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna bowed out of the 2025 WTT Champions Macao after a 3-1 defeat to Germany’s Patrick Franziska in the men’s singles round of 16 on Friday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Ranked 26th in the world, Aruna fought hard but could not sustain his momentum despite taking the third game.
Franziska sealed the contest 11-8, 11-5, 11-13, 11-7 at the Infinity Arena. Aruna had started the tournament brightly, delivering one of his sharpest performances in months with a straight-games victory over China’s Huang Youzheng (11-3, 11-8, 11-8) in Tuesday’s opening round.
Against Franziska, the African number one rallied after dropping the first two games, edging a tense third 13-11, but the German held firm in the fourth to book his spot in the quarterfinals.
Franziska had earlier claimed a dramatic five-game win over sixth seed Xiang Peng, recovering from a first-game loss to prevail 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 1-11, 12-10.
The result leaves Aruna still searching for his first victory over Franziska and his first quarterfinal appearance at a WTT Champions event since 2021 in Sweden.
