Atlas Lions Target Third CHAN Crown in Semifinal Clash with Senegal

Morocco head coach Tarik Sektioui has set his sights on guiding the Atlas Lions to a third African Nations Championship (CHAN) crown as his side prepares to face defending champions Senegal in the semifinals.

The North Africans advanced to the last four after edging co-hosts Tanzania 1-0 in the quarterfinals, booking a mouthwatering tie against Senegal at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on August 26. Morocco previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020.

“We know it won’t be easy facing the defending champions at this stage, but we are ready and fully aware of the challenge ahead,” Sektioui told reporters on Monday.

Morocco were absent from the 2023 edition due to political tensions with host nation Algeria, making this campaign their comeback to the continental competition reserved for home-based players. Sektioui stressed that his team is determined to reclaim its dominance.

“We went back to the drawing board after the setback against Kenya, and the players clearly understand what I expect from them,” he said. “Playing Tanzania in front of their home fans was difficult, but the squad stuck to the plan and got the result we needed.”

The Atlas Lions have impressed as the tournament’s most prolific side, scoring nine goals in five games. However, their attacking form will be put to the test against Senegal, who remain unbeaten and boast one of the most disciplined defenses in the competition.

The Teranga Lions secured their semifinal berth with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Uganda, underlining their status as strong contenders to retain the title.

In the other semifinal, Sudan will battle Madagascar at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, also on August 26, to complete the final lineup.

Morocco’s return to CHAN has been characterized by resilience, sharp attacking play, and renewed ambition. Their clash with Senegal is set to be one of the tournament’s defining encounters.
