Benevento Beat Competition To Sign Nigerian Forward

Nigerian striker David Chidozie Okereke has joined newly promoted Serie B side Benevento on a free transfer following his departure from Cremonese, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Benevento confirmed the signing of the 1997-born forward on a contract that runs until June 30, 2028, with an option for an automatic one-year extension that could keep him at the club until June 2029.

Okereke had attracted interest from several clubs before opting to continue his career in Italy. MLS side Cincinnati, as well as Turkish clubs Samsunspor and Gaziantep FK, were among the teams linked with the striker in the build-up to the move.

Benevento ultimately secured his signature as the club prepares for a return to Serie B, with Okereke expected to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

The Nigerian brings considerable experience of Italian football, having featured at the highest levels of the domestic game. He also gained experience in Turkey during a loan spell at Gaziantep FK, where he scored nine goals.

His combination of pace, mobility and physical strength is expected to provide Benevento with additional attacking options as they prepare to compete in Italy’s second tier.

The decision to hand Okereke a long-term contract reflects Benevento’s confidence in his ability to make a significant contribution following their promotion.

For the striker, the move represents an opportunity to remain in Italy and take on a new challenge after leaving Cremonese.

With no transfer fee involved and his contract potentially running until 2029, Benevento have secured an experienced forward as they look to build a squad capable of competing effectively in Serie B.
