Cheetahs of Benin striker, Junior Olaitan, has tendered an apology to his club Göztepe SK and fans after he was criticized for exchanging jerseys with Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The incident occurred last week after the league game between Galatasaray and Göztepe, where Olaitan and Osimhen swapped jerseys at full-time.
However, Göztepe supporters were displeased with the gesture, viewing it as disrespectful following the team’s defeat.
Facing backlash from fans, the Beninese international released a statement explaining the situation and expressing regret for his actions.
“I have a long-standing friendship with Osimhen, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, and when we met again years later, we wanted to exchange jerseys,” Olaitan said.
“I offered my apology to everyone for having done something that goes against the culture of this club.”
The club has since accepted his apology, while fans have been urged to move on from the incident as Olaitan looks to refocus on helping Göztepe in their league campaign.
