Broos Hits Back at Critics After South Africa's Historic Qualification

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos launched a spirited defence of his team after Bafana Bafana secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Thapelo Maseko's decisive second-half strike earned South Africa all three points in Monterrey, sealing second place in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico, who finished the group stage with a perfect record of three wins from three matches.

The result marked a landmark achievement for Bafana Bafana, who are making only their fourth World Cup appearance and their first since hosting the tournament in 2010.

South Africa's campaign had begun with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico, prompting widespread criticism of Broos and his squad. However, a resilient draw against the Czech Republic followed by victory over South Korea ensured the African side progressed to the knockout rounds for the first time.

Speaking after the match, Broos said qualification was the perfect response to those who had doubted the team.

"I'm very proud of the performance of my team, and I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths over the last few weeks who thought we had to change something," Broos said.

"We just did what we always do. We just did what I wanted to do, and this is the result."

The 74-year-old Belgian, who has managed South Africa since 2021, described the achievement as one of the most emotional moments of his coaching career.

"I've said before that this is probably one of the last tournaments of my career. To finish a career like I've had in this way is something every coach dreams of."

Broos also praised the strong bond he shares with his players, insisting mutual trust has been central to the team's success.

"Between me as a coach and them as players, there is something unique. Yes, I'm the coach, but I'm also a friend to them. The relationship between the players and me is very good."

South Africa's reward is a Round of 32 clash against tournament co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake.

Broos believes his players have the confidence and determination to continue making history.

"I know the players will be ready again and will try to reach the third round," he said.

"That would be even more historic. These players are chasing history. They want to prove themselves and show everyone that they are a very good team. We will see on Sunday if we can go even further."
