CAF Clears Gambia's Independence Stadium Ahead AFCON 2027 Qualifier

By BSN Sports

Confederation of African Football (CAF) granted provisional approval for The Gambia’s Independence Stadium in Bakau to host international matches, BSNSports.com.ng reports

The decision paves the way for the Scorpions to return to home soil after several years of playing their international fixtures at neutral venues in Morocco and Senegal because of stadium restrictions.

The development is significant for Ghana, who have been drawn alongside The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire and Somalia in Group C of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

With The Gambia now set to play at home, the Black Stars will face the prospect of a charged atmosphere in Banjul when they travel for the return fixture, rather than benefiting from the neutral setting used during the Scorpions’ previous home matches.

Independence Stadium gets provisional approval

The 30,000-capacity Independence Stadium has undergone extensive renovation work backed by the Gambian government.

The upgrades have reportedly covered key areas of the facility, including the playing surface, dressing rooms, floodlighting and media facilities, as authorities worked to bring the stadium back into compliance with CAF requirements.

CAF inspectors have provisionally approved the venue for senior international competitive matches. However, the clearance is not yet permanent.

The governing body is expected to deploy matchday inspectors during the opening fixtures to assess the stadium’s structural safety, crowd-control measures and operational standards before determining whether it meets all requirements for continued use.

Ghana face familiar challenge in Banjul

The return of competitive international football to Banjul could give The Gambia a significant boost in a group that already contains several strong sides.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will be looking to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament, but their task has now been made more demanding by the restoration of The Gambia’s home advantage.

The Scorpions are expected to benefit from strong local support, with a passionate home crowd potentially adding pressure on visiting teams.

The Black Stars' first meeting with The Gambia is scheduled for September 27–29, 2026, in Ghana, while the return fixture is scheduled for March 28, 2027, in The Gambia.

The two matches could prove crucial in determining the final Group C standings, particularly if the teams remain closely matched as the qualifying campaign progresses.

For Ghana, the prospect of travelling to a full Independence Stadium rather than a neutral venue means preparations will need to account for both the playing conditions and the atmosphere awaiting them in Banjul.

While the provisional approval represents a major step forward for Gambian football, the stadium’s long-term status will depend on CAF’s assessments during the opening rounds of the qualifying campaign.

With the qualifiers approaching, The Gambia’s return home has added another intriguing dimension to what could be a closely contested Group C.
