CAF Set To Move AFCON 2027 To South Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering a major change to the hosting plans for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with South Africa emerging as a potential replacement for the original hosts, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The tournament was initially awarded to a joint bid from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, marking a historic first for East Africa to co-host the continent’s biggest football competition. 

However, recent developments indicate that preparations across the three nations have fallen behind schedule, raising serious concerns within CAF over their readiness to stage the tournament.

Key infrastructure projects, including stadium renovations, transport networks, and accommodation facilities, are reportedly progressing slower than expected, prompting CAF to reassess the situation.

As a result, South Africa has now been identified as a strong alternative, given its proven track record in hosting major international tournaments. 

The country successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has continued to maintain world-class sporting infrastructure, making it a reliable backup option.

Sources within CAF suggest that discussions are ongoing, with a final decision expected in the coming months. 

Should the change be confirmed, it would mark a significant shift in hosting plans and a setback for East Africa’s ambitions to showcase its capability on the continental stage.
