Sampson Adedeji
Nigeria’s CAF Champions League representatives, Remo Stars FC, suffered a heavy 5–1 defeat to South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their second-round tie, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The encounter, held on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, saw the visitors stamp their authority from the opening whistle.
First-half goals from Tashreeq Matthews and Peter Shalulile gave the South African champions a comfortable 2–0 lead at the break.
Sundowns resumed the second half with the same intensity, extending their advantage through Miguel Reisinho in the 60th minute. Substitutes Arthur De Oliveira and Katlego Ntsabeleng added the fourth and fifth goals in the 74th and 84th minutes, respectively.
Remo Stars managed a late consolation when Samson Olasupo fired home a stunning strike from outside the box in the 76th minute, drawing loud cheers from the home crowd.
The Ikenne-based side now faces an uphill task as they travel to South Africa for the return leg, where they will need a near-miraculous comeback to reach the group stage of the competition.
