CAFCL: We Want To Do The Double Over Remo Stars – Sundowns Coach
Sampson Adedeji
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Miguel Cardoso, has expressed his desire to complete a double victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The South African champions cruised to a dominant 5-1 win in the first leg played in Abeokuta on Sunday, putting one foot in the next round of the competition.
Despite the huge advantage, the Brazilian tactician insists his team will approach the return leg with full seriousness and respect for their opponents.
“We respect football, and to respect football is to go into the second match with an approach as serious as possible because the qualifying round is not finished,” Cardoso said.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will be very serious in the second leg. Obviously, our players are Sundowns players — it’s not South Africa playing, it’s Mamelodi Sundowns, not Bafana Bafana.”
Reflecting on the first leg performance, the former Espérance coach praised his players’ commitment and tactical discipline.
“We took the game very seriously. We knew Remo Stars use man-to-man marking all over the pitch, and we worked on that throughout the week,” he added.
“The players understood the plan perfectly and kept their attitude right. Scoring five goals against the Nigerian champions is not easy.”
The return leg is expected to take place in Pretoria, where Sundowns will aim to seal their qualification in style.
