CGC Volleyball Premier League: Customs Stay Unbeaten, COAS Extend Winning Run

The race for honours at the third Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League gathered further momentum on Day 6 in Abuja, with Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and COAS Spikers reinforcing their status among the leading contenders in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

As the first phase of the competition approaches its decisive stages, the battle for playoff positions continues to intensify. In the men’s division, Nigeria Customs Service, COAS Spikers, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), CNS Spikers and NSCDC remain firmly in contention, while Nigeria Customs Service, COAS Spikers, NSCDC, Benue Queens and Anambra Queens lead the chase in the women’s category.

Defending champions CNS Spikers maintained their challenge with a 3-1 victory over Kano Pillars. After claiming the opening set 25-18, CNS briefly lost momentum before recovering to win the next two sets and secure a valuable result.

NSCDC also strengthened their playoff ambitions with a convincing straight-set win over Sunshine Spikers, recording scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-17. The victory continued an impressive campaign marked by a series of crucial performances.

UCEM Volleyball Club delivered another strong display, sweeping aside Offa VC 3-0 to register one of their most convincing victories of the competition after an inconsistent start to the season.

COAS Spikers continued their impressive run in the men’s division with a commanding 3-0 victory over Life Camp VC. Although the second set proved fiercely contested and ended 32-30, COAS held their nerve to complete the clean sweep and maintain their upward momentum.

Nigeria Correctional Service once again underlined their title credentials with a hard-fought 3-1 comeback victory over Nigeria Police Force. After dropping the opening set, the Correctional Service side responded strongly to claim the next three sets. The win followed earlier successes against UCEM VC, Life Camp VC and Ajase Ipo, leaving them among the leading challengers despite their sole defeat to CNS Spikers.

League leaders Nigeria Customs Service extended their unbeaten run with another dominant performance, defeating Ajase Ipo in straight sets. Customs have emerged as the benchmark team in the men’s competition, having recorded victories over NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force, Defence Spikers, Nigeria Correctional Service, Sunshine Spikers and Ajase Ipo without suffering a defeat.

In the women’s division, Anambra Queens continued their impressive resurgence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Life Camp VC. The result built on previous wins against Excelsior VC and Benue Queens and further strengthened their position among the leading teams.

One of the most entertaining contests of the day saw NSCDC edge VIP & Partners 3-2 in a thrilling encounter. After both sides shared the opening four sets, NSCDC dominated the deciding set 15-6 to secure a valuable victory. Despite the loss, VIP & Partners continued to enhance their reputation as one of the surprise packages of the season.

Olalomi Royal Angels returned to winning ways with a straight-set victory over Excelsior VC, while Nigeria Customs Service maintained their perfect record by dispatching Fire Service 3-0. Customs have been the standout team in the women’s competition, producing commanding victories over Benue Queens, VIP & Partners, Kada Emeralds and Fire Service.

The headline fixture of the day featured a highly anticipated clash between COAS Spikers and long-time rivals CNS Spikers. COAS emerged 3-1 winners, extending their recent dominance over their military counterparts and strengthening their title ambitions.

COAS head coach Elishama Elam praised the determination of his players after the victory, noting that their resilience proved decisive in a contest between two teams with a deep understanding of each other’s strengths.

“We told the girls it is not over until it is all over. They gave their best and were resilient to earn the win,” Elam said.

The coach acknowledged COAS’ recent success against CNS, having defeated them in both the Super Cup and the opening phase of the league, but stressed that their rivals remain a formidable side.

“We have taken that dominance over them but we cannot underrate them. The players were told to put in their very best and I am glad they won the game,” he added.

Despite the strong run of results, Elam declined to make predictions about the title race, insisting his team remains focused on taking each match as it comes.

Elsewhere, Benue Queens produced an impressive comeback to defeat Kada Emeralds 3-1. After losing the opening set, they responded strongly to claim the next three sets and remain firmly in contention near the top of the standings.

With six days of action completed, Nigeria Customs Service continue to set the standard in both the men’s and women’s divisions. However, challengers including COAS Spikers, NSCDC, CNS Spikers, Nigeria Correctional Service, Benue Queens and Anambra Queens remain within striking distance as the battle for playoff places and championship honours gathers pace in Abuja.
