CHAN 2024: Blow For Sudan As Injury Rules Out Captain From Nigeria Clash

Sampson Adedeji Sudan has been dealt a huge setback ahead of their crucial second group game against Nigeria, as captain Muhammad Abdelrahman has been ruled out due to injury, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Sudanese football has been on an upward trajectory since the appointment of Ghanaian tactician Kwesi Appiah, with the team qualifying for major tournaments including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and remaining in contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, their preparations for the Nigeria clash have been hit hard, with Abdelrahman, who was instrumental in their qualification campaign and their opening game against Congo, sidelined.

Reports suggest the influential midfielder may require surgery, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament. Sudan, who managed a 1-1 draw against Congo in their opening match, will now be aiming for their first win of the competition when they face Nigeria next Tuesday.

A victory would significantly boost their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

The Sudanese squad, largely composed of players from domestic giants Al Hilal and El Merrikh, will now have to rally in the absence of their talismanic skipper.
