Calls Grow For NFF To Involve Akwuegbu in Nigerian Football Development

Former Super Eagles striker Benedict "Ben" Akwuegbu has received growing support from football stakeholders and enthusiasts who are urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to give him a greater role in the development of the game in the country, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The calls gained momentum after Akwuegbu was honoured with the Most Valuable Sports Philanthropist of the Year 2026 award at the fourth edition of the Sports Legendary Awards (SLA), in recognition of his humanitarian contributions and commitment to sports development and community empowerment.
Several football enthusiasts believe the former international's experience as a player, football administrator and club owner would be valuable in strengthening the country's football structure.
Akwuegbu, who owns Akwuegbu FC, a club competing in the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), previously served as Assistant General Manager of Heartland FC during the club's successful back-to-back Nigeria Premier League title-winning campaigns. He currently serves as Technical Director of Mighty Jets FC and is also a consultant to Plateau United.
The Sports Legendary Awards, organised by Celebrity Sports Magazine, was held at the Chelsea Hotel in Abuja and attracted leading athletes, sports administrators, business executives, policymakers and other stakeholders in the Nigerian sports industry.
The organisers said Akwuegbu was recognised for his sustained commitment to youth development, philanthropy and community service, describing him as a role model whose impact extends beyond his achievements on the football field.
Presenting the award, they commended his efforts in nurturing young talent and using sport as a platform to create opportunities and inspire positive social change.
Speaking after receiving the award, Akwuegbu expressed appreciation to the organisers and dedicated the honour to everyone who has supported his football career and humanitarian activities.
«"This recognition is deeply humbling. Football gave me a platform, but true success is measured by the positive impact we make in the lives of others. I dedicate this award to the young people who continue to dream, and I encourage everyone in the sports community to keep giving back to society," he said.»
The Sports Legendary Awards annually recognise athletes, administrators, philanthropists and other stakeholders whose contributions have advanced sports and positively impacted communities across Nigeria.
Akwuegbu's latest recognition adds to his growing reputation as a respected football figure whose influence continues to extend beyond the pitch through youth empowerment, football development and charitable initiatives.
