The hopes of Nigeria’s representative, Customs, of reaching the quarter-finals of the ongoing African Women Club Volleyball Championship in Cairo have been dashed, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian side suffered a narrow defeat to Cameroon’s MKE in a thrilling five-set Round of 16 encounter decided on Sunday.

MKE started strongly, edging the opening set 25-22, but Customs responded emphatically to take the second set 25-16 and level the contest.

The Cameroonian side regained control by claiming the third set 25-23, putting themselves within one set of qualification.

However, the Nigerian team showed resilience, battling back to win the fourth set 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.

In the tense decider, MKE held their composure at crucial moments to secure a 15-10 victory, sealing a 3-2 win and booking their place in the quarter-finals.

Having led 2-1 at one stage, MKE were pegged back by a determined Customs side, but their ability to hold their nerve in the final set ultimately proved decisive in a classic knockout contest.
