Chelle Backs Okoye, Says Critics Ignored Goalkeeper’s Key Role in Poland Draw

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has come to the defence of goalkeeper Maduka Okoye following criticism of his performance in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Poland, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Super Eagles twice took the lead during the international friendly but were pegged back on both occasions, with Poland's second equaliser drawing particular attention due to the long-range nature of the strike.

Okoye came under scrutiny after being beaten by a powerful effort from near the halfway line late in the contest. While some observers argued that the Udinese shot-stopper should have dealt better with the attempt given the distance it travelled, Chelle dismissed the criticism and praised his goalkeeper’s overall contribution.

Speaking after the match, the Nigerian tactician questioned whether those blaming Okoye had watched the full game, insisting that the goalkeeper played a key role in keeping the Super Eagles competitive throughout the encounter.

“People who blame Okoye for the goal didn’t watch the game,” Chelle said. “You can see that he kept us in the game, and the goal can beat any goalkeeper in the world. We need to be fair about these things.

“I am happy with his performance, and that’s all that matters.”

The coach’s comments underline his confidence in Okoye, who produced several important saves during the match despite the disappointment of conceding twice.

Nigeria will now shift focus to their upcoming fixtures, with Chelle expected to continue assessing his squad as preparations for future competitive engagements gather momentum.
