Chelle Eyes Another Unity Cup Triumph With Revamped Super Eagles

Super Eagles will aim to retain the Unity Cup title when they face Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in Saturday’s final at Charlton Athletic Stadium in London, BSNSports.com ng reports.

Despite entering the clash as defending champions, the Nigerian team is approaching the encounter with caution after Jamaica pushed them to the limit in last year’s final.

Head Coach Eric Chelle has praised his players following Tuesday’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Zimbabwe and hinted that tactical and personnel adjustments could be made ahead of the showdown against the Caribbean side.

The Super Eagles and Jamaica played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the 2025 Unity Cup final before Nigeria triumphed 5-4 on penalties to successfully defend the trophy they previously won in 2002 and 2004.

The tournament’s inaugural edition in 2002 featured only Nigeria and Jamaica, with the Super Eagles claiming a 1-0 victory courtesy of former U17 captain James Obiorah. Two years later, the Republic of Ireland joined the competition, but Nigeria again emerged champions, with Bartholomew Ogbeche finishing as top scorer with three goals.

The 2004 edition also marked the international debut of former striker Obafemi Martins, who announced himself with a goal for the Super Eagles.

Chelle is expected to continue experimenting with his youthful squad in Saturday’s final. Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo could retain his place after keeping a clean sheet against Zimbabwe, while defenders Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu and Obinna Igboke may also continue at the back following their solid performance in the semi-final.

Igoh Ogbu, who plays for Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic, first broke into the senior national team setup during last year’s Unity Cup tournament.

In midfield, Tochukwu Nnadi is likely to partner Alhassan Yusuf and Samson Tijani, while the attacking trio of Terem Moffi, Philip Otele and debut sensation Femi Azeez could spearhead the attack.

Cyprus-based goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, midfielder Tosin Oyedokun, and forwards Owen Oseni and Rafiu Durosinmi are also available after making encouraging contributions from the bench against Zimbabwe.

Much attention will be on Azeez after the forward scored twice on his debut in the semi-final victory. His brace made him the first player to net twice on his Nigeria debut since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat in a 4-0 win over Burkina Faso 55 years ago.

The Super Eagles trained at Cray Valley on Thursday and are scheduled for their official training session at The Valley on Friday ahead of the final
