Chelle Highlights Challenges Facing Home-Based Players

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has urged patience regarding the integration of Nigeria’s home-based players into the national team setup following the side’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Nigeria secured their place in the final at The Valley in London thanks to a brace from forward Femi Azeez, continuing an impressive run in the competition under the Malian tactician.

Chelle included several players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in his Unity Cup squad as part of efforts to assess domestic talent at the international level.

The home-based contingent featured Michael Atata, Aderemi Adeoye, Tosin Oyedokun, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igbokwe, and Elias Ochobi.

Speaking after the match, Chelle acknowledged the potential within the group but stressed that the players would require time and guidance to fully adapt to the demands of international football.

“I need some time to work with them and make them part of the project,” Chelle said during his post-match interview.

The Super Eagles coach also highlighted the challenges faced by some of the domestic-based players, noting that several of them were experiencing European football environments for the first time.

“I know the players, and it is difficult for them to be here because maybe for some of them, this is their first time in Europe, so the pressure was high for them,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Chelle expressed satisfaction with their contribution and praised the effort they displayed in the victory over Zimbabwe.

“As I said earlier, I am happy with what they showed to Nigeria,” the former Mali coach stated.

The Unity Cup has provided Chelle with an opportunity to evaluate both established internationals and emerging domestic talents as he continues to shape the Super Eagles squad for future competitions.
