Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is grappling with mounting defensive challenges ahead of the December 10 deadline to submit Nigeria’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following the sudden international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle only unveiled his 54-man provisional list earlier this week later than many competing nations leaving him with limited time to resolve growing uncertainties in the back line. Troost-Ekong’s unexpected decision on Thursday added further complexity, as the experienced centre-back had been included in the squad and was expected to provide leadership ahead of the tournament in Morocco.

Football analyst noted that while the timing was surprising, Troost-Ekong’s reduced on-field influence made the move less shocking. Once a defensive mainstay, he had slipped to fourth-choice centre-back, making his international exit appear “logical” from a sporting perspective.

However, the retirement has prompted speculation beyond tactical considerations. Reports linking Troost-Ekong to a recent players’ protest before a 2026 World Cup playoff have raised questions about internal friction. Football stakeholders suggested the incident may have affected his standing within football administration, potentially contributing to his decision to step aside.

For Chelle, the implications extend across the defensive unit. Promising defender Benjamin Fredericks has been ruled out through injury, while Ola Aina’s delayed return to full match fitness leaves further uncertainty at right-back.

At present, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey are the leading candidates to anchor the centre of defence, with Zaidu Sanusi expected to retain his spot at left-back. The right-back position remains contested, with Bright Osayi-Samuel currently ahead but newcomer Ryan Alebiosu mounting a strong challenge.

Despite the disruption, the reshuffle creates opportunities for emerging players. Prospects such as Rafiu Durosinmi, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Tom Dele-Bashiru, and Alebiosu are among those who could benefit as Chelle attempts to blend experience with youthful dynamism in his final AFCON squad.
