Commonwealth Games: Nigeria To Submit Bid Ahead Of Deadline

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has confirmed that the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) is expected to submit all necessary documents, including government guarantees, for its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games before the November deadline, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The host nation for the 2030 Games will be decided at the CGF General Assembly in November.

So far, only Nigeria and India met the August 31 deadline to officially declare their intention to host the event, with Abuja and Ahmedabad proposed as their respective host cities.

Both nations dispatched high-level delegations to the CGF headquarters in London, presenting detailed plans to convince the Federation of their readiness.

According to gamesbids.com, Nigeria’s representatives held discussions covering Abuja’s hosting ambitions, candidate city requirements, the timeline for the process, and the CGF’s further expectations.

Canada had earlier shown interest, but financial constraints forced Ontario to withdraw its backing.

Similarly, Australia pulled out of the 2026 Games, compelling Victoria to pay penalties, which later paved the way for Glasgow, Scotland, to step in as emergency host.

For Nigeria, this marks a second attempt to stage the Games after its failed bid for the 2014 edition, where Abuja lost 47–24 to Glasgow. Unlike then, this time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has already expressed strong support for the project, though final formal approval from his office is still required.
