Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship: Team Nigeria Arrives India

Team Nigeria has touched down in Ahmedabad, India, for the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship a week-long event doubling as a qualifier for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian squad features 12 lifters across various categories, blending debutants with seasoned competitors ready to showcase the nation’s strength on the global stage.

Among the contingent are Ruth Asuquo (women’s 48kg), making her international debut, and Edidiong Umoafia (men’s 67kg), competing in his second championship.

Umoafia first represented Nigeria in Uzbekistan in 2021, qualifying for Birmingham 2022 where he clinched a bronze medal.

Other athletes in the team include Omolola Onome (women’s 53kg), Favour Agboro (men’s 65kg), Rafiatu Lawal and Ruth Ayodele (women’s 58kg), Islamiyat Yusuf (women’s 69kg), Adeda Adelaka (men’s 79kg), Sarah Matthew (women’s 77kg), Brenda Uchenna (women’s 86kg), Mary Osijo (women’s +86kg), and Lucky Joseph (men’s +110kg).

Nigeria boasts a rich history in weightlifting, with its athletes consistently winning medals at continental and global championships.

The 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship is held from August 25–30 in Ahmedabad, while the 2026 Commonwealth Games is scheduled for July 23 August 2 in Glasgow.
