Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, defeating Rwanda 106-62 to complete a flawless qualifying window and secure a place in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The convincing victory capped an outstanding three-game run for Nigeria, who finished the window unbeaten after earlier victories over Tunisia and Guinea. The impressive performances marked a significant resurgence for the team under head coach David Fizdale.

Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu led the way with an excellent all-round display, recording 17 points and seven assists to steer Nigeria’s offence. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and Stan Okoye each added 13 points as D’Tigers combined offensive efficiency with defensive discipline in a dominant outing.

Nigeria asserted control from the opening quarter and never relinquished its advantage, overwhelming Rwanda on both ends of the court in one of the team’s most comprehensive victories in recent years.

The result completed an impressive turnaround for a side that entered the qualifying window under pressure to revive its hopes of reaching the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

D’Tigers began the window with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia, as Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu scored 17 points each, Wes Iwundu added 14 points, while Uche Iroegbu contributed 13 in a fiercely contested encounter.

Nigeria followed that success with a dramatic 80-79 comeback victory against Guinea. Caleb Agada starred with 22 points, Uche Iroegbu added 14, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu chipped in with 10 as D’Tigers erased a late deficit to claim a second consecutive win.

The emphatic triumph over Rwanda completed a clean sweep of the qualifying window, highlighting the team's resilience, improved chemistry and consistent execution across all three fixtures.

Under Fizdale's guidance, D’Tigers displayed growing cohesion throughout the tournament, with experienced campaigners and emerging talents combining effectively to produce disciplined performances on both offence and defence.

With three successive victories, Nigeria has significantly strengthened its bid to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup while restoring confidence after a challenging start to the qualification campaign.

Having successfully navigated the opening phase, D’Tigers will now shift their focus to the second round of the African qualifiers, where they will face stiffer competition in pursuit of one of the continent’s coveted places at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
