The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Sports, Didier Budimbu, has struck a defiant tone ahead of his country’s anticipated showdown with Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing strong confidence in the national team’s ability to deliver a major upset, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking during celebrations following DR Congo’s qualification, Budimbu made a bold remark directed at Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. “Cristiano Ronaldo should cry when he faces DR Congo,” he declared, drawing loud cheers from an enthusiastic crowd.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo secured their place at the tournament after a 1–0 victory over Jamaica in a continental playoff final held in Guadalajara. The result marks the nation’s return to the World Cup after a 52-year absence, with their only previous appearance dating back to 1974.

Nicknamed the Leopards, DR Congo will open their campaign against Portugal on June 17 in what is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated fixtures of the group stage.

The team’s qualification has sparked nationwide celebrations. President Felix Tshisekedi announced that each player would be rewarded with a house and a car in recognition of the historic achievement.

The president later hosted the squad at the Palais du Peuple, as jubilant crowds flooded the streets of Kinshasa to welcome the team. Supporters turned out in large numbers, celebrating as players paraded through the العاصمة in an open-top bus.

DR Congo’s qualification represents a landmark moment for the nation, ending more than five decades away from the global stage and signalling renewed ambition within its football ranks.

With strong political backing and growing public enthusiasm, the Leopards now turn their focus to the tournament, aiming to make a significant impact and justify the confidence surrounding their return.
