Drama in Cairo: Hidden Camera Found In El Shenawy’s Goal
Sampson Adedeji
Football fans in Cairo witnessed an extraordinary moment of drama on Friday when a hidden camera was discovered inside the goalpost of Egypt’s veteran goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenawy, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The incident unfolded just moments before the start of the second half. As players were returning to the pitch, the fourth official alerted referee Abongile Tom about a suspicious object lodged inside the net.
Upon inspection, Tom ordered the goal frame to be checked thoroughly, and to the astonishment of the crowd, a small hidden camera was found tucked behind the side netting.
El Shenawy appeared visibly frustrated and tried to play down the matter, insisting it posed no problem.
He argued briefly with the officials, gesturing that the device should remain.
But Tom, standing his ground, made it clear that the laws of the game could not be compromised. “Remove it, or the game will not continue,” he was overheard telling the match coordinators.
Match stewards eventually entered the pitch, carefully retrieving the camera amid jeers and cheers from the crowd.
While the exact purpose of the device remains unclear, speculation immediately spread through the stands and across social media was it an attempt at live content capture, or something more controversial?
The second half eventually resumed after a brief delay, but the talking point of the evening was no longer the scoreline it was the bizarre spectacle of a hidden camera in a top-flight fixture.
Neither the Egyptian Football Association nor the stadium authorities have issued an official statement, but insiders suggest an investigation will be opened to determine how the device was placed there without detection before kickoff.
For referee Abongile Tom, his firm decision was widely praised, ensuring that fair play and match integrity were not compromised in what turned out to be one of the strangest episodes in recent Cairo football history.
