Egypt secured a 2–1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly as both sides continued preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, with the match offering valuable insights into emerging talents and tactical options, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Pharaohs opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Ahmed “Zizo” exploited space down the right flank, outpacing Zaidu Sanusi before delivering a low cross into the penalty area. Saber arrived unmarked to apply a simple finish, giving Egypt the lead.

Nigeria responded shortly before halftime. In the 45th minute, a low free kick from Zaidu caused problems for the Egyptian goalkeeper, who failed to hold the ball. Chidozie Awaziem reacted quickest, heading home the rebound to restore parity. The goal marked a moment of redemption for both defenders, having been involved in the buildup to Egypt’s opener.

The decisive moment came seven minutes into the second half. Mostafa Mohamed showed awareness inside the box by stepping away from the ball while in an offside position, allowing a cutback to reach him legally. He then drove a low effort past goalkeeper Amas Obasogie to restore Egypt’s advantage.

Nigeria made several changes at halftime, with Obasogie replacing Stanley Nwabali in goal and Tochukwu Nnadi coming on, while Dele-Bashiru was withdrawn. Despite periods of promise, the Super Eagles were unable to find an equaliser as Egypt held on for the win.

While the result will not count toward official caps, the match served as an important audition for several players. Tochukwu Nnadi impressed after coming on in the second half, showing composure and authority in his role. Ebenezer Akinsanmiro also showed promise despite being deployed out of position, while Fago displayed flashes of skill but lacked end product.

Concerns remain in wide defensive areas, particularly regarding the performances of Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi, while Nigeria’s buildup play appeared predictable at times, with limited penetration outside the influence of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Akinsanmiro showed signs of nervousness but remains a prospect for the future.

Chidozie Awaziem captained the side, while Akinsanmiro made his first-ever start for the Super Eagles. The match provided head coach Eric Chelle with valuable data ahead of AFCON, as Nigeria continue to assess squad depth and readiness for the tournament.
