Ethiopian Athletes Shine as Yenagoa Hosts Landmark International 10km Race

The inaugural Yenagoa City International 10km Race concluded on a high note, earning widespread recognition as a landmark event that has set a new benchmark for road racing in Nigeria, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Meticulously planned and executed, the race attracted commendation from across the sporting community for its organisation, coordination, and adherence to international standards. Stakeholders described the event as a significant step forward in the development of competitive road racing in the country.

The race was officially flagged off by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, and featured strong performances from elite local and international athletes.

In the men’s category, Ethiopia’s Habtamu Birhane Molla claimed first place with a time of 29:23.62. Nigeria’s Gang James finished second in 29:59.90, while Francis James secured third place with a time of 30:16.71.

The women’s race was dominated by Ethiopian runners, with Shewaye Dueo Tolosa emerging victorious in 33:50.07. Tigist Girma Aseta finished second in 34:07.25, while Worke Gacasho Jilo placed third in 34:57.72.

Speaking in an interview with Arise Television, Yetunde Olopade of Nilayo Sports Management highlighted the extensive preparation behind the event’s success. She attributed the seamless delivery to strategic collaboration, detailed planning, and a unified vision among organisers and stakeholders.

She described the race as a defining moment for road racing in Nigeria, noting that it also served as a platform to commemorate International Women’s Day and celebrate the contributions of women to sports development and leadership.

Olopade expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri for his support, which she said was instrumental in the successful staging of the event.

Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Akpe described the race as a milestone in Bayelsa State’s sporting development. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that promote youth empowerment, grassroots participation, and healthy living.

Akpe encouraged athletes to draw inspiration from Olympic champion and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, urging them to pursue excellence with discipline and determination.

According to him, more than 1,000 residents of Bayelsa State participated in the race, reflecting a growing culture of sports engagement at the grassroots level.

Also speaking, Kola Daniel of the National Sports Commission commended the leadership of Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, noting that their collaborative approach is driving growth and transformation in Nigeria’s sports sector.

Prize money for the competition was awarded across both categories, with winners receiving $5,000, second-place finishers $3,000, and third-place finishers $2,000. Top Bayelsan athletes were also rewarded with a cash prize of one million naira.

The success of the Yenagoa City International 10km Race highlights Bayelsa State’s growing reputation as a destination for major sporting events, while reinforcing the role of sports in fostering community engagement, youth development, and international visibility.
