Ex-NFF Board Member Ayo Omidiran Set for Senate Confirmation as FCC Chairman

The Senate is set to screen and confirm Honourable Ayo Omidiran as Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) on Wednesday, alongside the newly appointed Service Chiefs, following a formal request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

President Tinubu’s letter, read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urged the upper chamber to give urgent consideration to the nominees in line with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act (Cap A20, LFN 2004).

According to the President, the appointments are part of efforts to strengthen the command structure of the Armed Forces and improve coordination in the country’s ongoing fight against insecurity.

After reading the correspondence, Senator Akpabio referred the nominations to the Committee of the Whole, scheduling Wednesday’s plenary for the screening and confirmation exercise. He described the process as a matter of urgent national importance, stressing that prompt legislative approval would ensure a smooth transition in military and administrative leadership.

The newly appointed Service Chiefs include:

Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff

Major General Waidi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff

Rear Admiral Ibrahim Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff

Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke – Chief of Air Staff

Also listed for confirmation is Honourable Ayo Omidiran, a former House of Representatives member and respected sports administrator, who was appointed by the President in August to head the Federal Character Commission, pending Senate approval.

Senate President Akpabio said all nominees would be screened together to fast-track the process and ensure a seamless transition across key federal leadership structures.

The Senate’s swift consideration of the nominations, analysts note, reflects the renewed collaboration between the Executive and the Legislature aimed at consolidating defence leadership and enhancing governance efficiency.

Ayo Omidiran is widely recognized for her contributions to Nigerian sports administration. She served on the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Board from 2002 to 2005 and has been a member of the FIFA Women’s Committee since 2006. She is also the founder of Omidiran Babes, a female football club based in Osogbo, Osun State, established in 1997.
