Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu is set for an emotional return to Austria later this year as he lines up with his former club, Sturm Graz, at a charity tournament featuring several top European sides, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The four-day event, scheduled to take place in Graz from December 27 to 30, 2025, will bring together eight teams made up of former players from leading European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Rapid Wien and Admiral Wacker.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Akwuegbu expressed his excitement about reuniting with supporters in the city where he enjoyed some of the most memorable moments of his playing career.

“It will be a fantastic reunion with the fans in Graz,” Akwuegbu told BSN Sports. “I hope to relive the form I showed when we won the league title, the FA Cup and the Super Cup.”

The former Nigeria international recalled that his performances at Sturm Graz played a major role in earning his first Super Eagles call-up.

“After some strong performances at the club, including scoring twice against AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League in 2000, I received my invitation to the Super Eagles,” he said. “I scored 15 goals in 30 matches and was voted the club’s Best Player.”

The tournament has been divided into two groups. Group 1 features Bayern Munich, Rapid Wien, Admiral Wacker and the Croatian national team, while hosts Sturm Graz have been drawn in Group 2 alongside Old Violets, GAK and St. Pauli.

Akwuegbu is expected to spearhead the Sturm Graz attack when they face St. Pauli in their opening group match on December 27.

Organisers anticipate a crowd of at least 4,000 spectators, who will be treated to the return of several well-known names from European football. Other invited stars include Kulovits, Bazina, Junuzović, Liendl and Sabitzer.
