Ex-Super Eagles Star Earns Degree in Health and Social Care from UK University

Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Social Care from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, more than a decade after retiring from professional football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Akwuegbu’s academic milestone underscores his commitment to personal development and lifelong learning, complementing a football career that saw him represent Nigeria on the international stage.

During his studies, Akwuegbu received multiple commendations, including the Top Achiever Award as well as the Employability Awards in bronze, silver and gold categories recognition that reflected his strong academic performance and professional readiness.

He was also honoured by the Chief Executive Officer of HC-One, who praised his dedication and consistency, saying, “I am proud of your commitment and ongoing loyalty.”

Following his graduation and professional training, Akwuegbu has secured a position within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), where he now works alongside nurses, doctors and consultants.

Akwuegbu was selected to U-16 World Cup Final squad in 1989 hosted by Scotland. Golden Eaglets eventually lost to the winner Saudi Arabia at the quarter-final stage. He also played for the U-20 national side.

In 2000, his success in Austria made him joining the Africa Cup of Nations tournament which he played his first international game against Tunisia. With his progress in the team he was involved in the 2002 World Cup Qualifier and scoring two goals in the process, His performance made him selected to the 2002 World Cup Final squad. He played the only World Cup game against England.
