FIFA Considers Expanding World Cup To 64 Teams
Sampson Adedeji
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that football's world governing body is considering expanding the FIFA World Cup from 48 to 64 participating nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Infantino disclosed that the proposal has already been presented to the FIFA Council and will now undergo further study before any final decision is taken.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first edition to feature an expanded 48-team format, up from the previous 32-team competition.
If approved, the proposed 64-team format would represent another major expansion in the tournament's history, allowing more countries from across the globe to participate in football's biggest event.
FIFA is expected to conduct a detailed assessment of the proposal before deciding whether the expanded format will be adopted for future editions of the World Cup.
