The Federal Government has intensified efforts to revive school sports with plans to upgrade sporting facilities in selected tertiary institutions across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The initiative was disclosed by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, during a meeting with the leadership of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).

According to Dikko, the project is aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development, nurturing future champions, and positioning selected institutions as Centres of Excellence for sports in Nigeria.

He noted that improving sports infrastructure in tertiary institutions will play a key role in discovering and developing young talents while contributing to the overall growth of the country's sports sector.

The NSC chairman also reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to supporting Ahmadu Bello University in hosting the 2028 Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games successfully.

The move forms part of the Federal Government's broader strategy to reposition school sports and drive the growth of Nigeria's sports economy through improved infrastructure and talent development.
